Academy Teen Center

 

The Academy Teen Centers mission is to create a positive environment that will contribute to the overall social, physical

and cultural development of teens in 6th- 12th grade by providing: 

  • Safe structured activities which encourage personal growth, leadership skills, and teamwork.

  • Unstructured activities which encourage individuals to explore areas of their own interest.

  • The opportunity for  continuing teen input and decision making in the planning of programs.

  • The opportunity for teens to participate in teambuilding and adventure activities designed to build confidence and improve skills.

  • A supervised place for teens to go   and “hang out”.

 

 

Academy Teen Center - Summer

(Teens that have completed grades 5-12)

Make the Teen Center your destination this summer! Drop in to enjoy pool, table tennis, air hockey, foosball, arts & crafts, homework room with computers that have monitored internet access, and special activities. Come after Awesome Adventures camp to spend more time with your friends! Students that will be entering 6th grade in the fall can attend during summer hours. Daily admission fees will be collected at the Teen Center for those who do not have passes.

 

Take it Home Tuesdays

A different craft project every week. Come and get your creative juices flowing and go home with a great creation!

Wacky Wednesdays

The Teen Center is proud to boast a brand new PS2 with all the DDR, Rock Band and Guitar Hero you can dream of thanks to a grant from the Ensworth Foundation. And...test your skills with our new Wii gaming system, made possible by the Glastonbury Alcohol and Drug Council.

Theater Thursdays

Stop in to view the hottest new releases on our surround sound system...oh and hey, we'll throw in some free popcorn too!

Academy Teen Center - School Year

Visit when summer is over for more great fun! Transportation is provided for after-school hours from Smith Middle and Gideon Welles to the Teen Center. At Smith, you must sign up at the main office and at Gideon you must bring a note and sign up in the main office. Please note: students who have purchased a school year pass do not have guaranteed seating on the bus. All students are required to sign up. Daily Admission and/or School Year Passes have many benefits including:

  • Teen Center Transportation (after-school hours)

  • Friday Movies (Pizza and beverages sold)

  • Staff Supervision (CPR and First Aid Certified)

  • Free admission to GLAD Coffeehouse Events (Grades 9-12 School Year Pass Only)

6,7,8 Grade Coffeehouse

Clear your schedules ‘cause this is gonna be one you won’t want to miss! Co-sponsored by the Glastonbury Drug and Alcohol Council (GLAD), join  us on Friday, March 7  from 6:00-9:00 p.m. for this awesome event! Big Daddy’s Racing will provide the race track, video game stations and DDR for your entertainment in the cafeteria. Refreshments and pizza will be sold, and the Teen Center will be open for games and fun! Advanced tickets (limited to the first 200 people) are required and WILL NOT be sold at the door. Purchase Tickets at the Teen Center or at Parks and Recreation. Tickets are $5/person. The Teen Center WILL NOT be open for after-school hours on this day.

 

Caribbean Day

You don’t have to be in Hawaii to wear hula skirts and leis! Join us at the Teen Center on Friday, May 23 for Caribbean festivities including bingo, the limbo and refreshments. Event will be held during after school hours from 3:00-6:30 p.m. for grades 6-8 and during evening hours from 7:00-10:00 p.m. for grades 9-12. FREE! No pre-registration required.

 

Ron-A-Roll Teen Trip

(Teens in grades 6-8)

Feel free to join us for Teen Center vacation week hours and then come on the field trip from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Fee includes supervision, transportation, admission, skate rental and ALL YOU CAN EAT PIZZA!

GLAD Coffeehouse Project

An alcohol and drug free program designed by teens featuring entertainment, food, and a safe place for high schoolers to gather with friends. Coffeehouses meet at the Academy Cafeteria, Gym and Teen Center on Friday nights, from 8:00-11:00 pm. Watch the Citizen for more details. Schedule is subject to change.

Awesome Adventures Teen Camp

(Teens that have completed grades 6, 7, 8 or 9)

Features leadership, trust, cooperation, self-esteem, team building, and decision-making skills incorporated in cooperative games and trips to theme parks, athletic events, adventure programs, swimming and special events. 6-7 grade groups will go on the same trips and participate in the same activities, but, for some of the trips, will do so on different days. Teens that have completed grades 6 & 7 should register for Gr 6-7 R or B. Teens that have completed grades 8 & 9 should register for Gr 8-9 G. Add a Teen Center Summer Pass for just $25 and your teen will have the option of attending the Teen Center after camp until 6:00 p.m. Daily admission to the Teen Center is $3/person. Leader-In-Training Program

(Teens that completed grades 7, 8 or 9)

 L.I.T. program is a VOLUNTEER program designed for teens wishing to gain experience in leadership training, emergency procedures, job interviewing skills, and other skills necessary to work for a summer camp. L.I.T. program registrants will participate in Awesome Adventures Camp on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On Monday and Friday, L.I.T.'s will be assigned to various summer playground sites for training and assisting summer playground staff. Upon registration, registrants will be required to complete an L.I.T. volunteer application form and obtain two written letters of reference. Fee includes registration in Awesome Adventures Gr 8-9 Program.

Teen Trips

(Boys & Girls that have completed grades 6-11)

Round the turns in a theme park coaster or ride the rapids down the Farmington River during one of our thrilling teen trips. July trips provide an opportunity to hang out with friends who are registered in the Awesome Adventures Camp. Buses travel with Awesome Adventures Camp participants. A Six Flags trip is also being offered in May. See page 10 for details!
